To monitor Amazon Cloud, you’ll need both PRTG and an Amazon Web Service CloudWatch account. There are two advantages to using CloudWatch: freedom from the constraints of an operating system and enhanced security due to fewer open ports during the verification of queries.
Monitor and analyze all Amazon instances
PRTG and CloudWatch monitor the instances of Amazon EC2, RDS databases, Amazon EBS data carriers, ElastiCache, and Elastic Load Balancing. SQS (Simple Queue Service) and SNS (Simple Notification Service) data is also retrieved, and the configured alarms are monitored. CPU load, latencies, and request counters are some examples of the data that is delivered to PRTG via CloudWatch. In addition, PRTG lets you monitor the metrics and protocol files that are generated for your applications and services, such as memory usage, transaction volumes, and error messages.
Create data linkages
PRTG extracts the CloudWatch data via the AWS CloudWatch Application Programming Interface (API), thereby allowing you to link it to other monitoring data, such as the router status. As a result, you'll be able to identify correlations while troubleshooting, correlations which would not have emerged by using CloudWatch alone.

iWhat is a sensor?
In PRTG, “Sensors” are the basic monitoring elements. One sensor usually monitors one measured value in your network, e.g. the traffic of a switch port, the CPU load of a server, the free space of a disk drive. On average you need about 5-10 sensors per device or one sensor per switch port.
The Amazon CloudWatch Alarm Sensor?monitors the status of an alarm that is configured for a CloudWatch service.
The Amazon CloudWatch EC2 Sensor monitors the performance of the Amazon Cloud Elastic Cloud Computing Service (EC2) in terms of CPU and network load, the read/write speed of hard drives, and EC2 status checks.
The Amazon CloudWatch EBS Sensor monitors the performance of the Amazon Cloud Elastic Block Store Service (EBS), and displays a variety of read and write operation values, such as total time, speed, and count.
The Amazon CloudWatch ELB Sensor?monitors the performance of the Amazon Cloud Elastic Load Balancing Service (ELB), and displays values on host count, HTTP result count (2xx, 3xx, 4xx, 5xx), latency, and queues.
The Amazon CloudWatch RDS Sensor monitors the performance of the Amazon Cloud Relational Database Service (RDS) with regard to CPU load, CPU credit usage, CPU credit balance, memory usage, incoming and outgoing database/network traffic, and storage information.
The Amazon CloudWatch SNS Sensor monitors the performance of the Amazon Cloud Simple Notification Service (SNS). This sensor allows you to record messages and error messages.
The Amazon CloudWatch SQS Sensor connects to the Amazon Simple Queue Service, searches for the tasks that are yet to be executed, and identifies delays.
The Amazon CloudWatch ElastiCache Sensor monitors the performance of the ElastiCache Service and provides you with values on CPU load, memory, incoming and outgoing cache/network traffic, and cache statistics.
